THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. The composers of the First World War have never enjoyed quite the exalted status of their poet confreres, yet their contribution was no less poignant or profound. Enjoying a new, professional status, most composers and musicians of military age donned uniforms in the same way as their fellow citizens. Many were either wounded or killed. Those that returned attempted to express their horror, especially in the aftermath of war when music seemed to act as a form of catharsis. Equally poignant, too, was the reaction of the older generation of composers who lamented the destruction and whose respect for the German musical values suffered an irrevocable crisis, one which also helped to define a sense of national music after the war.
